Kanu Maiʻa (Banana Planter), giclee print by Dietrich Varez

Initially, Hawaiians introduced bananas to the islands, cultivating native varieties that persist today. These bananas vary in consumption, with some enjoyed raw and others cooked. In ancient Hawaiʻi, it was considered taboo for women to eat bananas. Dreaming about bananas, encountering a man carrying them, or bringing bananas on a fishing canoe was also deemed as bad luck.
