The 7th Annual Volcano Pottery Sale 6/12 & 6/13
Friday, June 12, 2015, 3-8pm & Saturday, June 13, 2015, 9am-3pm
Join thirteen diverse ceramic artists from Hawaiʻi Island for the 7th Annual Volcano Pottery Sale, on June 12 & 13. The sale will be held at the Niaulani Campus of the Volcano Art Center, in Volcano Village from 3:00 – 8:00pm on Friday, and 9:00am – 3:00pm on Saturday.
This is a great opportunity to see a wide range of ceramic works, all in one location, and to meet and talk story with the artists. The cool rainforest surroundings of Volcano Village create a serene environment in which to enjoy the finely handcrafted wares. Functional pottery and ceramic sculpture ranging from low fired Raku wares to high fired porcelain with crystalline glazes and soda fired stoneware will be shown.
This year in addition to the sale, there will be an exhibit of new work by each potter, and the public is invited to bid for these pieces in a silent auction. And don’t miss demonstrations of throwing on the potter’s wheel on Saturday from 11:00am – 2:00pm.
Returning from previous years will be Lisa Louise Adams, Birgitta Frazier, Ron Hanatani, Chiu Leong and Emily Herb all from Volcano Village, Shannon Hickey and Carol Yamashita from the Hilo area, T.R. Andrews of Kurtistown and Margaret Lynch and Shelby Smith from Puna. Participating in the sale for the first time will be Claire Seastone from Holualoa, Suzanne Wang of Hakalau and Robert Troost from Puna.
In addition to being a studio potter, Claire Seastone is director of the ceramics program at Donkey Mill Art Center in South Kona. Suzanne Wang uses a variety of techniques to create works inspired by nature, and Seastone and Wang have been experimenting with soda firing, a process which creates unique surface effects. Robert Troost specializes in lush high fired crystalline glazes on porcelaneous stoneware.
Samples of fine Volcano grown teas will be available for tasting courtesy of Tea Hawaiʻi on both days of the sale. Thai food by Aunty Pon’s Cafe will be available for purchase on Friday and Volcano Hanabi will have sushi and bentos on Saturday.
