Flows by Robert Weiss
This piece was inspired by the 2022 eruption of Mauna Loa Volcano. Lava erupted into the summit caldera followed by flows erupting from cracks on its northeastern flanks. Lava eventually came within 2 miles of the Saddle Road before halting. Thousands of people drove along the Saddle Road to view the first eruption of Mauna Loa in 38 years. I’ve done many plein air paintings from those same flanks of Mauna Loa. This studio piece was based on those studies, with the addition of imagined lava, cloud, and traffic flows.
