Join artist Mary Milelzcik for a Mixed Media Papermaking workshop on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 10 am – 2:30 pm at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus. Newcomers and advanced students are welcome. $70/$65 (VAC member), plus a $45 supply fee.
This workshop will introduce you to papermaking using recycled papers with local plant materials, dyes, and earth pigments, using a household blender. Various sized moulds and deckles are available for participants to make paper, scrolls, layered or special projects. Participants are encouraged to bring flowers and other dried plant materials to add to the pulp for coloring or to imbed in their paper.
The workshop also covers the selection, preparation, and process of using and painting with various local plant fibers, plant dyes, and earth pigments. To allow for more papermaking time, the instructor will source, prepare and cook plant materials for pulp, dyes, and paint, in advance of the class. Plant fibers used in this workshop may include wauke (paper mulberry), banana, ginger, lemongrass, cane grass, etc. (depending on availability).
You will leave with a basic knowledge of papermaking, a variety of papers, pulp sources, and instructions on how to make paper at home.
