Dietrich Varez Panel Discussion and Film

The Varez Legacy program is an engaging, public program that will honor Varez’s life, art, and legacy through a free public exhibit, a talk-story event, a movie screening, and an online exhibition. The Programs share Dietrich’s deep connections to Hawaiʻi’s peoples, stories, and places which inspired him to create the art and writings he is well known for. A true artist for the people, Varez carved a deep understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian values and lifestyle that can be learned and perpetuated through his art. The Program begins with this free exhibition and also offers a free event on Sunday, April 7th which will provide insight into the life of the man behind the art.
Beginning at 2 pm a film from VAC’s Archive Collection featuring Dietrich will be shared followed by a panel discussion of people who worked closely with Dietrich during his life. Volcano Art Center encourages all those who have been touched by his story as told through his prints, paintings, books, and illustrations to attend the event which will be held in Dietrich Varez Hall at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Refreshments will be provided. Questions are to be directed to Emily C. Weiss at (808) 967-8222 or via email at gallery@volcanoartcenter.org.
