Iolani Palace, print L94, by Dietrich Varez. The cornerstone for the present palace was laid in 1879 on the site of the original palace built in 1845 for Kamehameha III. It was given the Hawaiian name of ‘Iolani for Kamehameha IV (Alexander) in 1863 at the request of his brother Kamehemeha V who had just succeeded him as King. It is flanked by kahili feather standards, an ancient symbol of royalty (from left to right, bottom to top) Hawaiian crown, Coat of Arms, Order of Kapiolani medal, Hawaiian flag, Order of Kalakaua medal, Hawaiian Crown.
