Tangle Niaulani is a new series of Zentangle-inspired classes celebrating the diversity of the Niaulani Rainforest guided by Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) Dina Wood Kageler. The first class of this ongoing series will blend creative textile art with Zentangle art and to create a Treasure Bag featuring the endemic hāpu`u `i`i fern (Cibotium chamissoi). This sub-canopy species can be found along the Niaulani Rainforest Trail just beyond the Volcano Art Center’s Varez Hall. Hāpu`u `i`i is one of the three species of hāpu`u treefern in the Niaulani Forest. It can be distinguished from its cousin hāpu`u ferns by the stiff purple to blackish hairs along the stem of the `i`i frond.
In this class, tanglers will embellish a printed frond pattern with individualized Zentangle patterns and colorful textile pens. We will then sew our denim bags and celebrate our unique forest-inspired creations.
No previous experience with textile art is necessary. Weather permitting, we will visit the hāpu`u `i`i fern in its forest habitat, so comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing are suggested. Previous experience with Zentangle classes or tangle patterns are useful.
Cost is $35/$30 VAC members plus a $15 supply fee.
