Thursday Night at the Center: Amalya’s Beads: A Novel by Dina Kageler
Join Hawai`i Island author Dina Wood Kageler on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 6 p.m., at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village as she recounts the life of the ethnic Manobo people along an upland river in the mountains of Mindanao, Philippines, during the early 1970s. Stories documented by her letters home and journal entries lend real-time details to her descriptions of the river life and beyond, including the sweeping societal changes at the imposition of Martial Law by President F. Marcos in 1972.
Dina Wood Kageler is a journalist and storyteller who grew up in Texas and journeyed through islands of the Pacific in the early 1970s. Settling in Hawai`i, she has for many years been a respected literary, visual, and performing artist and arts educator in the Volcano Community on the Island of Hawai`i.
