Beginning & Advanced Paper-making with Mary Milelzcik
Join artist Mary Milelzcik for a Papermaking workshop on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 10 am to 2:30 pm at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Newcomers and Advanced are welcome. $70/ $65 VAC Members plus $38 supple fee.
This papermaking workshop, using a household blender, will introduce you to papermaking using recycled papers with local plant materials. Students will start with a postcard-sized Japanese suketa to make several sheets of paper. Larger moulds and deckles will be available for participants who choose to make large pieces of paper, scrolls, or to do special projects. Participants are encouraged to bring dried plant materials to add to the pulp for coloring or to imbed in their paper.
The workshop also covers the selection, preparation, and process of using various local plant fibers, plant dyes, and earth pigments. Plant fibers used in this advanced workshop may include wauke (paper mulberry), pineapple, banana, ginger, lemongrass, cane grass, etc. (depending on availability). To allow for more paper making time, the plant materials will be sourced, prepared and cooked into pulp in advance.
You will leave with a basic knowledge of papermaking, a variety of papers, pulp sources, and instructions on how to make paper at home.
Mary Milelzcik has a B.A. degree from Sonoma State University’s School of Expressive Arts, a radical two-year upper-division interdisciplinary experimental program, where you worked with a mentor, and chose your own path in upper-division art. Printmaking and papermaking were her focus. This transformative experience set the path for an interesting career as a mixed media artist and photographer; as the Curator at Highways Performance Space and Gallery in Santa Monica CA for ten years; and as an instructor of mixed media encaustic art, papermaking and printmaking.
