Born and raised in Hawaii, Lacyann Kaheakū is a third generation Canadian from her mothers lineage and her Hawaiian genealogy dates back to the 1700’s.

As an indigenous Hawaiian artist, she has influence from her upbringing in the duality of both the continent, and as an islander.

With both formal, and self training, Lacyann believes her talent and strengths come from her ancestors.

With over 18 years of experience as haumana o Tom “Pohaku” Stone, 12 years of experience as student to Carole Sakata, 11 years on the Art After Dark Advisory Board, and part of the founding group of the “Chinatown Arts & Culture District”, being an artist and supporting other artists is now just part of a lifestyle. It has become engrained in every day living. Ma ka hana, ka ‘ike.

“I feel like I’m merely a conduit of my ancestors. That it is them who work within me to create. I discovered this when I started working with wood. That it was already in me.” -Lac

Lacyʻs Quilt Patterns were designed to bring awareness to the lack of protection of our Native Hawaiian artists. Trademark and intellectual property of Hawaiian Quilt-makers are an example of how loosely the word “Hawaiian” is used. All these designs are original, and although inspired by quilt patterns from other artists, have been tweaked and re-designed for print purposes (not appliqué). This first series is a tribute to all things that come first.
