Book Presentation: “Rainforest Pu’uhonua” by Kahikahealani Wight

For this month’s Thursday Night at the Center, join author Kahikahealani Wight for a presentation on her latest book, Rainforest Pu’uhonua. 

Rainforest Puʻuhonua tells the story of five years spent living in a Hawaiian rainforest in the 1980s. It combines one womanʻs search for her Hawaiian roots, stories about the Hawaiian rainforest and its rare gems, including native birds, plants, and insects, and insights into Hawaiian world view and thinking.

Millions of visitors enter Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park each year, drawn by the ever changing spectacle of volcanic eruptions and lava flowing into the sea. Few of them explore the Hawaiian rainforest, a threatened ecosystem close to the National Park, although the state of Hawaiʻi is known as the “endangered species capitol of the world.” Fewer still are aware of the recent revival of Hawaiian language and culture which reflect a strong spiritual connection between Hawaiian people and our natural world.

About the author: Kahikāhealani Wight has taught Hawaiian language for over twenty years in Honolulu. She has also written Learn Hawaiian At Home and Illustrated Hawaiian Dictionary.
