Movie: “Waste Land”
A tale of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.
Filmed over a 3 year period, “Waste Land” follows the prominent artist, Vik Muniz from his current base in New York to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump outside of Rio de Janeiro. Together with an eclectic band of “catadores” who live at the dump and pick out recyclables, they recreate enormous photographs of themselves out of garbage, revealing both their dignity and despair as they dare to re-imagine their lives as the process unfolds. Panel discussion to follow with special guest host, Volcano resident and “Trash Show” impresario, Ira Ono, along with Recycle Hawaii’s Executive Director, Paul Buklarewicz.
