Pele Dispersing the Hala, print P05, by Dietrich Varez. Mythology has it that when Pele first arrived in Hawaii, her canoe became entangled in some hala trees. In her anger, Pele tore up all the trees and tossed them all about. This event accounts for the spread of these trees throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
