Volcano Art Center (VAC) is proud to announce the exhibition “Nalu Builds” on display from June 28th – August 10th, 2025. The exhibit features handcrafted furniture and functional art using sustainably sourced local hardwoods from the Island of Hawaiʻi.  The opening reception will be on Saturday, June 28th, from 2pm -4pm. The gallery is open daily, 9am -5pm in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park.  While the exhibit is free to attend, park entrance fees apply.

Known for tropical design with a modern flair, Nalu Builds is a boutique manufacturer located on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.  Every piece of furniture is created using sustainably sourced local woods.  The family owned and operated team creates both custom heirloom quality, and large-scale practical works of art that will last for generations.

Inspired by the island style furnishing of his youth in Hawaiʻi as well as his love of mid-century modern design, co-owner and lead designer Kevin Coons has created a contemporary tropical aesthetic that grows in popularity.  Kevin collaborates with lead builders,  Kent Indie, their team of craftsmen, Louis Silva-Sampaio, David Wong, Rick Coons, and numerous local artists to bring their unique vision to life. In conjunction with the Nalu Builds Exhibition, the Volcano Art Center is pleased to present the 3rd biennial juried Volcano Wood Show held at the Niaulani Campus. The team at Nalu Builds will assist in selecting works and designating award winners.  The Volcano Wood Show opens to the public on Saturday, July 19th with a reception open to the public from 4-6pm that day.  The exhibit continues Wednesday – Sunday, 10 am – 4 pm at Volcano Art Center Niaulani (19-4074 Old Volcano Rd.) in Volcano Village through August 10th.

VAC is currently accepting online submissions for the Volcano Wood Show through Monday, June 30th, 2025. The show is open to experienced, novice and student woodworkers. Participants are encouraged to create items including furniture, sculpture, bowls and functional items from wood from Hawaiʻi grown trees.
