‘Iwa Bird Leads The Way, Open Edition, Giclée by Gary Eoff
This image depicts the discovery of Hawai’i by Chief Hawai’i Loa.
Ancient Polynesians navigated by the stars, winds, swells, currents, clouds and the flight of birds. The ‘Iwa bird leaves land in the morning and returns at night. Spotting the ‘Iwa bird would tell the navigator the direction of land. The tatoos show the ‘Iwa bird leading the canoe to Hawai’i, which lies beyond the clouds on the horizon.
