“There are legends about the “Night Marchers” but my first encounter with them was through reading Kawai Strong Washburn’s book entitled “Sharks in the Time of Saviors.” For a few years this ʻōhiʻa root sat in my wood shop waiting. After reading Washburn’s book – The shape of the wood suggested a marching figure carrying a heavy burden.” – Haysmer
After studying art at Madrid University, I received an M.F.A. in Fine Arts at Michigan State University. I taught sculpture and art history at community colleges in Michigan and at the National Art School in Australia. The focus of my current art includes inspiration from local Hawaiian legends, Polynesian navigation, local birds and landscapes.
