“For some years my bas reliefs have been of living native species, but when I found an old watercolor of these Hawaii-Island birds from 1930’s, but now extinct, I was compelled to give them honor through this creation. (There are other birds with similar spelling on different Islands)” – Haysmer
After studying art at Madrid University, I received an M.F.A. in Fine Arts at Michigan State University. I taught sculpture and art history at community colleges in Michigan and at the National Art School in Australia. The focus of my current art includes inspiration from local Hawaiian legends, Polynesian navigation, local birds and landscapes.
