Volcano Art Center (VAC) is proud to announce its 6th biennial quilt show, Peace By Piece. The exhibition will be on display at VAC’s Niaulani Campus at 19-4074 Old Volcano Rd. in Volcano Village. Quilters and fiber artists are invited to explore acts of connection created through fiber, fabric, pattern and stitch. Peace by Piece will be open for viewing Wednesday – Sunday from 10am – 4pm.,  from July 18th – August 9th 2026.
This year’s exhibition is juried by Barbara Kurgan. A current resident of Hilo, Kurgan has had a varied career in photography, visual display, decorating, and product design. After art school, she became a fashion photographer and then established her own company, BK Studio, which for several years produced art, directed and styled interior and product photography for clients including House and Garden, The New York Times Magazine, Neiman Marcus, Dewars, Pottery Barn, Target, Cowtan and Tout and Brunshweig & Fils, among others. From there, she became the Interiors Editor at Home|Style magazine and then at Elle Décor. More recently, she joined Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia as Deputy Creative Director and then as Vice President and Design Director of Martha Stewart Furniture. Currently, she is working as a creative director and design consultant in the home furnishings industry.

The public is welcome to attend the opening reception of Peace By Piece on Saturday, July 18th from 2-4pm at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Â The reception will take place in Dietrich Varez Hall at 19-4074 Old Volcano Rd.

The Volcano Art Center highlights textile artists  in a special pop-up event on July 25th and 26th, held in conjunction with Peace by Piece, the 2026 quilt show.
Create A Needle Book!
Create a needle book with Lisa Louise Adams and Robin Scanlon on Sunday, August 2nd, from 1pm -4pm.  In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to sew your own needle book using upcycled fabrics—perfect for organizing needles, pins, and small sewing essentials. No experience necessary. Just bring your curiosity and any favorite fabric scraps you’d like to incorporate. Cost is $65 / $60 for VAC members plus a $25 supply fee.
