Come celebrate May Day at the Volcano Art Center (VAC) on Friday, May 1st! Join VAC in honoring the Hawaiian custom of lei making and giving. Join Lei Makers, musicians and hula practitioners in activities focused on one of Hawaii’s most iconic symbols of aloha.
Festivities begin at 11am at VAC Galler in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Featuring fragrant blossoms and plant materials provided by the Volcano Art Center Gallery, learn tips to sewing the perfect lei laʻi or lei pua. Adding to the festivities will be live music by Christy Leinaʻala Lassiter, Kēhau Tamure and Miss Holly K. and hula performed by Leila C. Ryusaki. These free events honor the unique way that multi-cultural traditions are woven together to create a diverse, tolerant and beautiful community here in Hawaiʻi Nei.
All May Day events are supported in part by a grant from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority and Kilohanaʻs Umeke Program. While these are free events, National Park entrance fees apply to events at VAC Gallery.
