Since 2017, Laulima has been increasing community involvement in conservation and reintegrating native species into our everyday lives. Laulima fosters advocacy for native Hawaiian flora + fauna. All purchases directly support conservation efforts throughout Hawaiʻi, including endangered species protection and ecosystem restoration. Together, we are building resilience against climate change in Hawaiʻi. Hawaiʻi is the extinction and endangered species capital of the world. Nearly 90% of Hawaiʻi’s native plants are threatened by extinction, while 70% of native birds have already gone extinct. This is largely due to habitat loss and the impacts of invasive species. Urgent action is needed in order to prevent further extinctions.
Danya’s background is in ecology and conservation biology (she has ZERO formal training in art). Her inspiration comes from her love of native Hawaiian ecosystems. Having spent years working with endangered species and restoring native forests, her artwork is deeply personal and draws from pilina (relationships) with native Hawaiian flora and fauna.
