Pele Over Volcano Art Center, MA26 giclee print by Dietrich Varez
The Volcano Art Center Gallery building (also known as the 1877 Volcano House Building) in
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is surrounded by the flora, fauna, geology and mythology the
Hawaiian islands are blessed with. Dietrich states “To carry out the metaphor, I put a bird nest
secluded in the Lehua flowers below. A couple ʻIʻwi eggs are being incubated there. That’s
because the Art Center is itself a ‘place of incubation’. It hatched me out and continues to do
so to many others as well.”
