Honu ʻea (Hawksbill Turtle), MA21 giclee print by Dietrich Varez
The Hawaiian hawksbill turtle (honu‘ea) is a critically endangered sea turtle belonging to the family Cheloniidae. It received its English name for its unique beak-like mouth, which resembles that of a hawk and is perfect for finding food sources in hard-to-reach cracks and crevices. This species of turtle nests within the backcountry of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
