Description

Pele & Kamupua’a, print L44, by Dietrich Varez.  Pele, goddess of Hawaii’s volcanoes, had an amorous relationship with the Hawaiian pig-god Kamapua’a.  Their tempestuous affair should be seen as an allegorical description of the natural forces of verdure and vulcanism.

This is a giclée reproduction print on archival paper.

Dimensions: 18″ x 24″

Wonderful! A sensual scene portraying the volcano goddess Pele and her lover the pig god Kamapua’a. Hawaiian mythology paints Kamapua’a in many bawdy exploits, but none more fiery than is affair with Madam Pele. Their steamy affair ends in an epic fight in which Pele chases the pig god down from her volcanic home with flowing waves of molten lava. Kamapua’a runs fast, but is finally trapped when he reaches the beach. Yet, the wily pig-god escapes by using his shape-shifting powers. Kamapua’a turns himself into a fish and swims through the waves, fleeing a terrible burning demise. He escapes, naturally, in the form of the pig-fish. A fish known as the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa – the state fish of Hawaii.
