Before leaving Hawaiʻi, Pele’s uncle, Lonomakua, a legendary fire guardian, gave her a magic stick named pāoa. He told her it would help her find the fire island that would be her new home. With her magic digging stick, pāoa, Pele made many attempts to dig a pit for her island home.
