Hawaiian Runners, print L89, by Dietrich Varez. Prior to being united under King Kamehameha, Hawaii was made up of multiple chiefdoms who relied on swift runners to carry messages. Every year, kukini (runners) would compete against each other at an annual festival called a makahiki.
