E ‘Opihi, print L51, by Dietrich Varez. Gathering these small shellfish can be dangerous business and one must constantly keep alert for the waves. The central image is surrounded by related marine life. Similar to a snail, ‘opihi are endemic limpets in Hawai’i which are coveted as pupu that go well with poi. Because they cling to shoreline rocks, many ‘opihi pickers are lost to Hawai’i’s dangerous surf.
