Cultural Demonstrations

2020 Cultural Demonstrations Schedule

Aloha Friday

Each Friday, on the front porch of Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, visitors and kama‘aina alike are invited to experience a free, hands-on workshop presented by hospitable Hawai‘i Island practitioners.

Week 1– Ukulele with Wes Awana

(11am – 1pm)

January 3, February 7, March 6, April 3, May 1, September 4, October 2, November 6, December 4

Volcano area musician Wes Awana shares his love of ‘ukulele and Hawaiian music by giving family-friendly lessons on the iconic and inviting ‘ukulele.

 

Ukulele with Kainani Kahaunaele

(11am – 1pm)

June 5, July 3, August 7

Multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award recipient Kainani Kahaunaele shares her passion for all things Hawaiian. 

 

Week 2 – lei making with Randy Lee

(11am – 1pm)

January 10, February 14, March 13, April 10, May 8, June 12, July 10, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, December 11

Master lei maker, Randy Lee uses a variety of natural materials to fashion gorgeous lei from the freshest fern, leaves, and flowers that he personally gathers from the rain forests of Pana‘ewa. Enjoy the skill and wonderful stories that this well-respected practitioner has to offer.

 

 

Week 3 – hula and oli with Kaho‘okele Crabbe

(11am – 1pm)

January 17, February 21, March 20, April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18, October 16, November 20, December 18

Kumu hula of Hālau Ke Ola o Ka Lani, Moses Kaho‘okele Crabbe shares his extensive knowledge to teach the basics of hula, language, and chant.

 

Week 4 – lei making with Kaipo Ah Chong

(11am – 1pm)

January 25, February 28, March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 24, August 28, September 25, October 23, November 27, December 25

Tropical Agriculture farmer Kaipo Ah Chong will share his expert lei-making skills with VAC visitors. As a member of Halau Na Kamalei, his unique experience marries the science of agriculture with Hawaiian lei and hula traditions.

 

Week 5 – textile printing with Desiree Moana Cruz

(11am – 1pm)

January 31, May 29, July 31, October 30 

Utilizing plants cultivated in her garden and others collected from the forests, Desiree Moana Cruz will share traditional and contemporary dye processes and the use of repetitive symbolism featured in hula garments. She is an advocate for Hawaiian practitioners and a member of Hālau Na Kipu’upu’u of Waimea.

 

May Day is Lei Day

(11am to 1pm)

May Day Celebration: Friday, May 1st, 2020

May Day is Lei Day!  Come celebrate May Day at the Volcano Art Center Gallery porch on Wednesday, May 1st! Everyone is invited to join in the festivities from 11am – 1pm, featuring hands-on lei making demonstrations,  live music and hula dancing.  May Day honors the unique way that Hawaiʻi’s multi-cultural traditions are woven together to create a more interesting, more tolerant and more beautiful community.  With hundreds of fragrant blossoms and plant materials provided by the Volcano Art Center Gallery, learn tips to sewing the perfect lei, the proper protocol of giving and receiving a lei and more.  This free event at the VAC Gallery in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is supported in part by Hawai’i Tourism’s Kūkulu Ola Program.  National Park entrance fees apply.
