The Volcano Art Center invites you to attend The Water Gatherers, a fine art exhibition featuring the mixed media installation of Mary Babcock. This free exhibit will be on display from April 12 through May 3, 10AM-4PM, Wednesday-Sunday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus (19-4074 Old Volcano Road, in Volcano Village). The public is invited to meet the artist at the opening reception on Sunday, April 12 from 2-4. Members of Hālau Ke ʻOlu Makani o Mauna Loa, of which Mary is a member, will perform hula to honor the sacred ʻōhiʻa forest.  The Water Gatherers celebrates the beloved ʻōhiʻa lehua, pillar of the forest and conduit between the celestial waters – waters brought to earth from the stars – and to the oceans, riverlets, soils, and ultimately our own liquid bodies. To see this interplay brought to life, Mary has created an immersive space constructed of large scale translucent “wall” hangings created from reclaimed fishing nets and lines and hand-laminated household wax paper; this installation both honors and questions our complex relationship to this cosmic water cycle.
