You are invited to come and enjoy a swinging evening of jazz at the Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. (19-4074 Old Volcano Road), November 8th at 5:30pm.
The upcoming program will be a collaboration of the Volcano Art Center with Film director Jesse Tunison, and JP and the Jazztones, creating a visual jazz presentation of some of history’s favorite films with the jazz music associated with, or inspired by the musical scores.
The Jazztones will evoke nostalgia for times past, and then bring us up to date with a variety of the musical memories from these classics. Beginning with a jazz version of the theme from “Gone with the Wind” from 1939, “Casablanca” with the play it again Sam – ” As Time Goes By”, pulling at our hearts with love lost. “The Godfather” with the ironic, “Speak softly love” theme speaks to us in a different way. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” feature of Holly playing the guitar to “Moon River” beguiles us.
Several jazz focused films – “Bird” about Charlie Parker, and “Round Midnight” featuring Dexter Gordon for 1986, reflected the colorful lives of jazz creators.
In a more popular vein, the films of Disney have often featured memorable jazz – or “jazz able” compositions. A few of these – “When you wish upon a star” from Pinnochio – and “Everybody wants to be a cat” from “The “Aristocats” , with its ragtime jazz band holding forth.
Also “The Pink Panther” theme and the rock theme of “Spiderman” will be featured. to fill the bill of jazz renditions.
This will be a most colorful evening of jazzy film music, with the backgrounds of film cuts to accompany the Jazztones – led by Jean Pierre, JP Thoma on saxes, Greg Shirley with various guitars, Shawn Leavey on bass and Owen Matsui on percussion.
Don’t miss this special collaboration of the arts.
