Domino Cohn was born in Hilo, and grew up between her father’s family in rural Pennsylvania and her mother’s family in rural Hawai’i. Domino is a survivor of acute myeloid leukemia and credits the birth of her career as an artist to this personal eclipse. She is self-trained and driven to create conceptual imagery. Her work is shaped by her desire to be a worthy student of culture, place, and happenstance, and by her wry humor. She currently lives in Hōlualoa and is a haumana of Hālau Ka’eaikahelelani. As an artist inspired by Hawaiian culture but not of Native Hawaiian descent, she approaches this work with reverence, research, and a commitment to acknowledging that though she was born in Hawaii, she is not of Native Hawaiian descent.
