Introduction to Ulana Lauhala with June Dalde, February 4th

Join VAC Gallery artist, June Dalde, in an introduction to Ulana lauhala
(weaving of Hala leaves). Wednesdays, February 4th to February 18th, 2026  (3 sessions), from 2:30pm to 4pm. Ages 12 years old and up.

Lauhala is the traditional Hawaiian art of weaving with the dried leaves of the hala tree (Pandanus tectorius), a practice that has deep cultural significance. The term “lau hala” literally means “hala leaf,” and the durable, long leaves are prepared by cleaning, drying, and cutting them into strips before being woven into a wide array of items.

This Introductory class will focus on three individual projects, honing skilled needed for weaving leaves of the Hala tree.
Hala trees are found throughout the islands and are abundant here on the Big Island of Hawaii. All the lauhala in June’s projects are handpicked and processed. June makes it an all-day outing to gather the lau (leaf) and clean them before bringing them home. The lau will be prepared to weave into various objects for the classes. She will teach you how to make bracelets, flowers and ornaments.

Class Fees -$55/ $45 for VAC members.
