ARTIST STATEMENT: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a manifestation of harmful human practices on the Earth, perhaps more explicitly visible than overall climate change. Located between California and Hawaii and twice the size of Texas, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch formed within an ocean gyre of circular currents. Contents are estimated to weigh at least 80,000 tons and contain 180 TRILLION pieces of plastic—250 for each person in the world! Various plans are being created for cleaning up the garbage; none are quick fixes, and all emphasize reducing the use of plastics and the improvement of recycling efforts.
