ARTIST STATEMENT: Mussels thrive along the Pacific coast, providing a critical role in the ecosystem as well as a tasty meal. Like other bivalves, mussels are a natural filtration system, cleaning toxins from tidewaters. In using mussels to test the pollution levels in Seattle’s waters, disturbingly, scientists are finding high levels of caffeine and opioids. I admit that this “household cleaning” function makes me wonder a bit about what I am ingesting when enjoying the family favorite, “Moules Frites.
