Description

Loko I’a Kalo Ecosystem, giclee print by Carol Araki Wyban.

The Loko I’a Kalo ecosystem consists of taro planted in mounds with fish and shrimp.  Here, ʻoʻopu, āholehole, and shrimp live in the habitat between the mounds.  Fingerlings are captured in brackish water estuaries and carried in gourds upland.  There they are acclimated to the temperature and salinity before release.  ‘O’opu occur naturally and recruit themselves crawling and swimming up from the estuaries to upper reaches of the ahupua’a

Dimensions: Print 11 x 14; Framed 11.5″ x 14.5″

This giclee print is part of the collection of Fish Common to Lokoea:
All fishponds have a complex ecosystem. These are just a few of the fish grown in Lokoea. We ate heartily of all the fish, crab, and shrimp, except for ʻoʻopu, which are sacred to Volcano goddess Pele.
