ʻŌpae Lady, Photograph by Makoa Freitas
This image captures an old Hawaiian woman gathering ʻōpae (shrimp) and limu (seaweed). A once common practice along the tide pools and shorelines, it is much more difficult nowadays to spot the practice still being performed. Much decline in the practice and prevalence of seafood gathered can be attributed to the decline of healthy marine and estuary environment around Hawaiʻi, as well as climate change.
