Kī Hōʻalu (Slack Key), giclee print by Dietrich Varez

The Hawaiian language, ki hoʻalu translates as “loosen the key.” Today, we know this style as “slack-key guitar,” which may have originated from Mexican cowboys (paniolo) in the late 19th century.
