Monthly Hula ‘Auana Performances
The Volcano Art Center presents live music and hula ‘auana at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village on Friday, Sept. 27th from 4-5:30pm.
Master musician and Volcano residents Joe Camacho and Tithing Chun together provide nahenahe music meant to take you back to a different time in our Hawai‘i nei. Interpretation of the mele will be provided by the hula stylings of featured artists and Volcanoʻs own Ke ʻOlu Makani o Mauna Loa halau under the direction of Meleana Manuel. Additional “talk story” and audience participation of song, hula, and memories will add to the relaxed atmosphere that occurs in any backyard kanikapila. We invite you to come, share and enjoy.
Presented in the Niaulani rain forest these free monthly events are intended to deepen the appreciation of modern hula and its connection to our environment. The healthy Hawaiian rain forest at Niaulani is home to many native plants and birds referred to in songs and hula movements.
Weather permitting, the performance will be held outdoors in VAC’s outdoor sculpture garden. Feel free to bring folding chairs, blankets, refreshments, for a picnic-style event. If the weather is not ideal, the event will be held indoors. Please dress in warm layers and be prepared for sun and/ or rain.
