Arts of Hawaiian Kapa

with Dalani Tanahy

Saturday April 17, 2021

Morning session 10am – 1pm (full),  Afternoon session 2 pm – 5 pm   * ONLY 3 SPACES LEFT, please call to register.

Join kapa practitioner Dalani Tanahy as she introduces you to some of the activities involved in making a piece of kapa.  Start with stripping and beating a piece of wauke bark using traditional tools such as opihi shells and a shark’s tooth knife. Then learn about Hawaiian design and how it changed over time as you print your own canvas tote bag.  Once your kapa has dried you will learn about natural dyes and how they’re made and you’ll get to decorate your kapa with those earth colors.  By the end of the class you’ll have an understanding of the global and local history of bark cloth, its many uses, and the many resources needed to create it.  Please join us! The cost of the workshop  $65/$60 VAC Members plus $35 supply fee.
