Old Bird in a New World, Sculpture by Henry Bianchini.
Concrete, encaustic and stainless steel plate.
This old ‘i‘iwi steps tentatively from his origins into a new world. The ‘ōhi‘a forests are diminishing, and the air waves are criss-crossed by unseen lines that confuse him. Can he still go forth to nd a mate and sing his song? Will his children polli- nate another generation of ‘ōhi‘a to succeed the present forest? Or does the writing in the stone remind us of what could be lost for want of attention. We pause, listen and wonder.
This piece is part of our beautiful Sculpture Garden presented at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
