Product Description

‘O’opu Nakea, giclee print by Carol Araki Wyban.

ʻOʻopu Nakea is one type of goby. They are an animal form associated with the Volcano Goddess Pele and some fear eating it. There are legends and rituals relating to ‘oʻopu. It is highly prized with delicate white meat.  People were quiet about catching this fish.  If they were approached while they were cleaning it, there would be no acknowledgement or nod to the other person, for to do so would bring an obligation to share.
