Zentangle® Inspired Art: Shell We?
with Lydia Meneses, Certified Zentangle Teacher
Saturday August 19, 2017
10AM-1PM
This Zentangle adventure takes our imagination seaside on the south coast of England. There we’ll brave the chilly coastal air and comb the beaches for shells and ancient fossils…as young Mary Anning did in the 1800s.
This Zentangle session was inspired by a young woman living on the south coast of England during the 1800s, her name was Mary Anning. Little known to public, historians list Ms Anning’s skills as fossil hunter/collector/dealer, geologist & paleontologist. The amazing fact regarding Ms Anning, is she lacked a formal education; her family was of the “service class” of England’s society. Mary and her family sold seashells and fossils to supplement their family’s financial needs.
It’s written that the life of Mary Anning was the inspiration for this 1908 tongue twister, by Terry Sullivan:
She sells seashells on the seashores
The shells she sells are seashells, I’m sure
So if she sells seashells on the seashore
Then I’m sure she sells seashore shells.
In honor of Ms Anning, we will imagine ourselves walking along the salty seaside in search of our own “lucky” find… as we create tiles using various “seashell/nautical” like tangles, (patterns), that remind us of seashells.
Students’ kit will include: Sakura 01 brown pen, 3 General Multi-chalk pastels, two tortillions and three Zentangle tiles. No artistic experience is required; this class has been designed for beginners as well as experienced students.
