Thursday Night at the Center: Witnesses in Words: The Literature of Kīlauea

Thursday, July 12 at 7pm

Kīlauea seizes the imagination of every human witness to its powers. Never more than at the present, Kīlauea commands our attention.  People from every time and culture give voice to their experience of this Volcano.

This evening’s program offers a renewed view of the first Western visitors to Kīlauea.  Each of their perspectives adds another dimension to our own grasp of the momentous workings of this earth. Meet the first Westerner, missionary William Ellis, to see and describe Kīlauea. Titus Coan, Mark Twain,  Isabella Bird (reenacted by Jackie Pualani Johnson) are among the extraordinary writers and personalities brought to life through dramatic portrayals of their words, which resonate so strongly at this moment.

This event is free, although a $5 donation to Volcano Art Center is greatly appreciated. For more information, please call VAC at (808) 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.

This evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment.  The series is intended to inspire and enhance your appreciation of art and life experience, while fostering community connections.
