Thursday Night at the Center: Laysan Albatross (Mōlī) and Other Native Seabirds: Their Significance in Hawaiian Culture

Presenters Sabra Kauka and Hob Osterlund will facilitate a lively discussion about Mōlī and other native seabirds, their importance in Hawaiian culture, and the risks they now face. A short documentary called “Kalama’s Journey” will inspire further insights and conversation. A book signing of Holy Mōlī: Albatross and Other Ancestors will follow the presentation.
About the Presenters:
Sabra Kauka is a respected kumu from Kaua’i who teaches Hawaiian education to keiki through kupuna. Her interest in the birds stems from her cultural connection to their beauty. She is dedicated to providing a home to these spiritual beings that are losing theirs.
Hob Osterlund is an award-winning writer, photographer, and conservationist. She is the founder of the Kaua‘i Albatross Network, author of the book Holy Mōlī: Albatross and Other Ancestors, producer of the documentary Kalama’s Journey, and a fellow at the Safina Center.
