Thursday Night at the Center: “An Evening of Hawaiian Language” 

Volcano Art Center is proud to present “An Evening of Hawaiian Language” with University of Hawai‘i at Hilo instructor ʻĀlika Guerrero on Thursday, May 4 from 7 pm – 9pm. ʻĀlika will discuss the importance of perpetuating the Hawaiian language, and will give an overview of Papa ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, a series of beginning Hawaiian language classes slated for July at Volcano Art Center.

This informative, engaging presentation offers a unique opportunity for the community to learn more about the rich Hawaiian language, and to ask any questions about the upcoming class series.  The evening’s theme is ʻO ka ʻŌlelo ke Kaʻā o ka Mauli, translated to “Language is the fiber that binds us to our cultural identity.” Discover how the advocacy of the Hawaiian culture and language benefits all of Hawai‘i’s people. This presentation is free; however, donations are always welcome!

Mark your calendars! Papa ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, taught by ʻĀlika, will be offered for 8 weeks every Friday night beginning July 14, from 6pm – 7:30pm. This basics class will focus on simple vocabulary, conversation, grammar, and sentence structure. For more information please contact Volcano Art Center at 808-967-8222.

ʻĀlika holds a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies, History, and Anthropology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, and is currently pursuing his M.A. in Hawaiian Language and Literature. He has been teaching community Hawaiian language courses for 3 years.

This evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment.  The series is intended to inspire, enhance your appreciation of art and life experience, while fostering community connections.
