Mother’s Day Chamber Music Concert at Ni‘aulani Sculpture Garden

What do a classically trained violinist, a Harvard-educated math teacher, a former Park Ranger, and a local Hilo realtor all have in common?  They are members of the Volcano Chamber Players, a string quartet that will be performing classical chamber music for the “Mother’s Day Chamber Music Concert” on Sunday, May 14, from 3pm – 5pm at Volcano Art Center’s Ni‘aulani Sculpture Garden.

Treat your mother or yourself to an afternoon of fine chamber music and pupu this year for Mother’s Day, as you enjoy a tour of the lovely Ni‘aulani Sculpture Garden. The Great Room provides the perfect setting for an intimate afternoon of music in the forest, steps away from the Ni‘aulani Sculpture Garden.

Volcano Chamber Players will perform favorite classical works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Puccini, as well as popular romantic music such as Music of the Night (from Phantom of the Opera) by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sunrise, Sunset (from Fiddler on the Roof), and Blue Tango by Leroy Anderson.

Tickets for the concert are $20/$15 for VAC members. To purchase tickets call Volcano Art Center at 808-967-8222 or purchase tickets online!

Funds raised from this event will support the Ni‘aulani Sculpture Garden and ongoing programs at Volcano Art Center. Volcano Art Center Ni‘aulani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.

About the Volcano Chamber Players

Glenda Fern Johnson is a classically-trained violinist.  She started violin at the age of 5 in England, continued her training in Missouri and California, and received a Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of Central Missouri.  She has taught music, English, and in her home studio.  Glenda was Concertmaster of the Independence Community Symphony, was a first violinist in the St. Joseph Symphony in Missouri, and also was the Concertmaster of the Scottsdale Symphony in Arizona for many years.

In addition to playing violin, Glenda is also an accomplished pianist and singer.  She retired to Hilo four years ago, which is where her mother and grandparents lived for many years.  Presently she is a member of the Orchid Isle Orchestra and the Volcano Chamber Players, and recently retired from the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra.  She teaches private lessons in her home in Pahoa and in Hilo.

Mark Caudill grew up in Massachusetts, playing his Oma’s violin in Boston’s fabulous youth orchestra (BYSO), but he put it away while studying at Harvard.  Lo and behold, when he took the violin out of its case ten years later in Charlotte, North Carolina, it had transformed into a fiddle, so Mark studied Celtic and Old Tyme styles with Jon Singleton.  As he and his fiddle aged, he began playing old Medieval and Renaissance tunes with the band Cantiga, touring around the Eastern states for five years.

Mark and his partner Holly spawned a small musician named Sky, and found their way to the Big Island, where Mark plays music with the Orchid Isle Orchestra, the Kiltlifters, and the Volcano Chamber Players.  He teaches math and physics at St. Joseph’s High School in Hilo. He is also very busy building a house for his in-laws on his land in Wa’a Wa’a.

Susan McGovern was born and raised in Honolulu, and began violin studies when she was 10 years old.  She studied violin with Arthur Loventhal (Honolulu Symphony Orchestra) and Ralph Winkler (Eastman School of Music); she studied viola with Betty Deeg, principal violist of Honolulu Symphony.  She graduated with a degree in Music Education from University of Hawaii at Manoa.  He has played viola professionally with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, Maui Symphony Orchestra, and the Don Ho Show.  Currently, she is a member of the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Kona, and the Orchid Isle Orchestra.  She and husband Rob moved to Volcano in 1985, where she worked as a Park Ranger in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  She was Education Director for the Volcano Art Center and currently leads Road Scholar education groups through five Hawaiian Islands.

Meg Malcomson Saunders began playing cello at age 10. She studied for several years in Pasadena California with Eleonor Schoenfeld, an internationally renowned cellist and teacher on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and Master Teacher at Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. As life took its twists and turns, 40 years passed without a cello in her life, until Meg’s husband, desperate for a unique and inspired Christmas present, gave her a cello and a new hobby was born and a new passion rekindled. Muscle memory had survived!!

Meg has played principal cello for the Orchid Isle Orchestra for 6 years and with various string ensembles.  She played principal cellist for the UHH Performing Arts production of Miss Saigon in 2014 and has studied with Herb Mahelona in Hilo.  She currently is an active Realtor in East Hawaii and is available for teaching early cello learners. Teach them early because it really matters!! You don’t forget how to ride a bicycle.
