Monthly Hula ‘Auana Performances
A classic style hula ʻauana performance is slated with musicians Joe Camacho and Tithing Chun. They will be joined by a dancer from Ke ʻOlu Makani o Mauna Loa halau under the direction of Meleana Manuel. Additional “talk story” and audience participation of song, hula and memories will add to the relaxed atmosphere that occurs in any backyard kanikapila. We invite you to come, share and enjoy.
Performed against the backdrop of the beautiful Niaulani rain forest, these free monthly hula performances from 4-5:30pm will surely deepen the viewer’s appreciation of modern hula. The healthy Hawaiian rain forest at Niaulani is home to many native plants and birds found only in Hawai’i and is referred to in songs and hula movements.
Weather permitting the performance will be held outdoors in VAC’s outdoor sculpture garden. Feel free to bring folding chairs, blankets, refreshments, for a picnic style event. If weather is not conducive the event will be held indoors. Please dress in warm layers and be prepared for sun and/ or rain.
These monthly performances deepen the understanding and appreciation for modern hula. Performances begin at 4pm at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village typically on the fourth Friday of each month. Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the County of Hawai’i’s Department of Research and Development.
