he Volcano Art Center is proud to feature “Russian Ark.” Russian Ark is a experimental historical documentary and drama film directed by Alexander Sokurov. It was filmed entirely in the Winter Palace of the Russian State Hermitage Museum in a single 96-minute shot. The film displays 33 rooms of the historic museum, which were filled with a cast of over 2,000 actors dressed in costume and full regalia with three full size orchestras performing throughout the film.
The film was featured in the Toronto International Film Festival, San Francisco Film Critics Circle Awards, Silver Condor Award for Best Foreign Film and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.
Russian Ark received high critical acclaim. Roger Ebert wrote, “Apart from anything else, this is one of the best-sustained ideas I have ever seen on the screen…. The effect of the unbroken flow of images is sometimes dreamlike, then every edit is an awakening. Russian Ark spins a daydream made of centuries.”
