Monday Movie Nights: MOANANUIĀKEA: ONE OCEAN. ONE PEOPLE. ONE CANOE.

October 14, 2019 at 6:00pm
MOANANUIĀKEA is a feature-length documentary about Hōkūleʻa’s most ambitious journey to date: the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage.

In 1976, a voyaging canoe sparked a cultural revival that quickly spread throughout Polynesia, breathing life into ancient myths and legends. More than four decades later, Hōkūleʻa continues to inspire a new generation of navigators and voyagers to gather their courage and sail beyond the horizon of the Pacific. MOANANUIĀKEA: ONE OCEAN. ONE PEOPLE. ONE CANOE. celebrates the historic Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage that connected countless individuals and communities from around the globe. This voyage also represented the fulfillment of the vision of Nainoa Thompson and his contemporaries, the passing of the mantle of celestial navigation to the next generation of kānaka maoli who will retain the skills of their ancestors and perpetuate this tradition for generations to come.

Director Naʻalehu Anthony will be present to introduce the film. $10 donation suggested. Popcorn & snacks will be available for purchase. Lanikai Brewing Company will be serving their signature craft beers. Bring your own cushion.

Lanikai Brewing Company is an award winning, Island Inspired® authentic Hawaiian craft beer company making 100% of our brews in Kailua, Hawaii. We take our cues from premium, local, rare, and exotic ingredients grown by local farmers and foraged across the Pacific to bring you bold and flavorful beers that you will find nowhere else utilizing Hawaiian terroir with local yeast and bacteria. Pour a nice solid head to breathe in the flowers and fruits, the same aromas carried by our gentle trade winds. It’s paradise in a bomber bottle, best shared with friends on the beach.

All-School Mauloa Canoe Educational Event

Also happening on Monday, October 14, from 9am – 1:30pm, Nā Kālai Waʻa will bring their double-hulled canoe “Mauloa” to Volcano Art Center, along with eight educators.
