Japanese Bookbinding with Charlene Asato

Saturday, April 15, from 9am – 12pm

Why go out and purchase a new notebook when you can create your own?  Spend the morning with instructor Charlene Asato learning the art of traditional Japanese bookbinding in this fun, hands-on workshop.

There are four traditional styles: Yotsume Toji (four hole binding), Koki Toji (Noble Binding), Asa-No-Ha Toji (Hemp Leaf) and Kikko Toji (Tortoise Shell). You will complete at least two styles, one with a soft cover and one with a hard cover. More will be covered as time allows.  These books are wonderful for albums, journals, one of a kind books, scrapbooks, and more! Learn the techniques that will have you creating your own keepsake books for years to come.

The “Japanese Bookbinding” workshop happens on Saturday, April 15, from 9am – 12pm at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Cost is $35/$32 VAC Members plus a $10 materials fee. Prior bookbinding experience is not necessary.

Tools to bringgluestick, x-acto knife with fresh #11 blade, cutting mat, scissors, pencil, metal edge ruler, bone folder, old magazine or catalog for gluing, awl (if you have one).

Asato avidly pursues book arts, paper arts, photography, calligraphy and doll arts. Her books have been in many juried shows, locally, nationally and internationally and some have won awards. She finds it very exciting that a simple fold changes a two-dimensional plane into a three-dimensional form. These artist books provide a wonderful avenue to convey this energy. She enjoys imparting this excitement to others through workshops.
