Hula Voices with Dr. Noe Noe Wong-Wilson

Volcano Art Center’s 2018 Hula Voices series will continue on May 3rd with special guest Dr. Noe Noe Wong-Wilson.  Each month, Hula Voices presents an engaging, intimate “talk story” session with Hawai‘i Island’s hula practitioners, as they share their hula genealogy, traditions, protocols and experiences.  These free, educational offerings occur regularly on the first Thursday of each month, from 7- 8pm at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

The May 3rd program will feature Dr. Noe Noe Wong-Wilson with moderator Desiree Moana Cruz.  Dr. Wong-Wilson is Executive Director of the non-profit organization Lālākea Foundation and Project Director of Ka ʻAha Hula ʻO Hālauaola 2018.  She is a Hawaiian Hula and Cultural Practitioner and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology specializing in Hawaiian Cultural Anthropology from University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, a Master of Arts Degree in Pacific Islands Studies from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and a Doctor of Philosophy from University of Waikato’s School of Maori and Indigenous Studies. Dr. Wong-Wilson was the coordinator of the first Ka ʻAha Hula ʻO Hālauaola in 2001 as well as the World Indigenous Peoples’ Conference on Education in Hilo in 1999.  She is a long time resident of Hilo and serves as President of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Hilo.
